Golf Day Fundraiser for March 2009
Development officer, Storm Trentham and SCI ambassador, Charlie Gold have plans well under way for the first SCI Golf Day at Tidworth Garrison Golf Club on 27th March 2009. Charlie has annual golf days as fund raisers for his tournaments as a professional. In 2009 he has generously decided to use the day to raise money for SCI. It promises to be a fantastic tournament, with amazing prizes to be auctioned after lunch. It is hoped that Obongita Osore, the Kenyan SCI Director will be present at the tournament, together with UK SCI trustees. They should be available to talk about the work of the charity. Cycle ride raises over £150
Four year 7 pupils have become the latest to show concern for their less fortunate fellow pupils from Kenya. Kieran, Seth, Anna and Nick completed a 10 mile round trip from the village of Reawla, within the catchment of Hayle Community School. The circuit included the tough incline from Angarrack to Connor Downs. No doubt the thrill of knowing they had raised £150 spurred them on.

Wales lacrosse team show support for SCI
The Junior Wales Lacrosse team has adopted Sporting Chance International as their special group for support. Realising how life changing it can be to play sport and be part of a team, they see this as a brilliant opportunity to support others, helping Kenyan youth share in the benefits and enjoyment sort brings. The girls will proudly display the SCI web address on their shirts every time they play. SCI is grateful to the members of the team and wishes them success during the season.

Four year 7 pupils from Hayle Community School, Holly Weeks, Brittany Marsland, Rebecca Stephens and Imogen Hollinshead have raised over £160 after running in relay on the hill to school. The four young runners were so moved by their experiences during the special school African Awareness Day, that they decided to do some fund raising of their own for SCI.

African Awareness Day

Hayle Community School students benefited from the new partnership with SCI and their onsite gym, Cornwall Therapy & Fitness. They took part in a special African Awareness Day on Thursday 18th September. Each year group were involved practically in discovering more about the harshness of life in Kenya. Activities included a lot of walking, fetching & carrying water and building scaled huts from basic materials. In the evening a special presentation was held in the school hall to kick start a new SCI initiative Small Change, BIG Changes. Patrick Sakwa Nyendwe, Mayor of Mumias district (pop approx. 300,000), judged the year 9 house making contest. On Friday he and his town clerk, Richard K. Mutai, were introduced to Hayle Town Mayor, Mr. John Coombes. It is hoped that they will formalise links between the two.

Small Change, Big Changes

Everyone has a few coins in their purse or pocket. The idea could not be more simple. Just put any spare change, however small, into a collecting box. When the money from all the boxes is gathered in it will make big changes possible for the young people of Kenya. The scheme has raised over £250 in the first 3 months.

If you would like to see your small change make big changes contact us for a collecting box now. You may even consider becoming a collecting box coordinator, distributing them to your family and friends, or putting one in your workplace. Hertfordshire PE teacher goes to Kenya
Jo Lupton, a PE teacher at St. Georges' School, Herts., has completed a very successful trip to Kenya in August 2008. Jo heard about the work of Sporting Chance International from Storm Trentham, SCI Development Officer. They originally met through their international involvement with lacrosse. On returning from her trip with SCI to Kenya at Easter Storm contacted friends through Facebook, trying to spread the word of her trip, the experience and the amazing work that SCI carries out. Jo had only to read the first paragraph of her group entitled ‘SCI The trip of a lifetime’ and she caught the bug. Now in its 10th year, SCI is always looking for volunteers who want to travel to Kenya to continue the impressive work being done.

Jo's life and passions largely revolve around sport. From a young age she loved her sport and was happy to try her hand at anything! She considers herself very fortunate to have experienced sport at the highest level, highlights including co-captaining the U19 England Lacrosse squad to the World Champs in 2003, a real memory! Yes she loves the competition, and in particular the winning, but "you can’t beat the feeling of being part of a team". Surrounding herself with like-minded people who are all working together to achieve a common goal is for her where the excitement lies! "You work together, and feel unbeatable!" It was this that spurred her on to join the work of SCI for a 12 day trip to Kenya.

Jo was delighted to have the support of her school and raised over £400, which was taken to Kenya and use directly to support the work of SCI. She also carried many other gifts to distribute to school children during the visit.

A blog of her story gives a candid and emotional dairy of her time in Kenya. Be careful, it may have a profound effect upon you as you follow her experience.

The Godolphin School raise money for Kibera classroom
Development Officer, Storm Trentham, has once again enthused the girls of The Godolphin School to raise funds for The Kibera Girls Soccer Academy in the slum of Kibera on the outskirts of Nairobi. The school, a much appreciated fund supporter of SCI, has already donated over £500 for the building of a much needed classroom so that the girls could stay on for their A level courses. Storm handed over the gift during her visit to Kenya in April 2008. On hearing that further funds were required to build the classroom because it would have to be built as a first floor due to lack of space, she returned with a passion to raise the extra funds. The Godolphin House girls responded magnificently with a further donation of almost £1000.

If you would like to support the work of SCI have a look at the fund raising pages on the +Support Us tab, or write to us at info@sportingchanceinternational.org.uk.
